100 BEST COMPANIES TO WORK FOR 2005

  No. 1: Wegmans Food Markets
Has an unusual motto: "Employees first, customers second." The Wegman family's rationale: When employees are happy, the customers will be too.

  No. 2: W.L. Gore
Workers evaluate fellow team members each year to determine compensation. The company says it prides itself on a "team orientation," and that all employees share the same title: "associate."

  No. 3: Republic Bancorp
Last year customer service reps received $10,000 in bonuses. The bank provides the same family-leave benefits for fathers as well as mothers. New moms can return to work on a part-time basis indefinitely. One benefit each staffer can enjoy: Everyone gets his birthday off.

  No. 4: Genentech
This fast-growing biotech knows how to say thanks. After launching three new drugs from June '03 to Feb. '04, it celebrated by throwing a lavish party for all employees and their guests, with Elton John as the entertainment. The company is also big on keeping things social: Every Friday it hosts gatherings called Ho-Hos, with free food and drinks for all employees.

  No. 5: Xilinx
Investors rule at this supplier of programmable chips, where one of every five employees holds a patent and all employees receive stock options upon hire.

  No. 6: J.M. Smucker
Employees at the Ohio-based jam and jelly king—last year's No. 1—had better watch their waistlines: The company serves them complimentary bagels and muffins every day.

  No. 7: S.C. Johnson & Son
Workers in the manufacturing division of this Wisconsin-based consumer-products company get performance reviews determined by peers, not by management. Apparently employees like that kind of power: Turnover is negligible.

  No. 8: Griffin Hospital
Employees enjoy the same amenities available to patients at this unusual 160-bed Connecticut hospital where visitors are permitted around the clock: family-style kitchens with meal service, strolling musicians, chair massages, and—hooray!—absolutely no fluorescent lighting. The hospital also has no "restricted" zones, and nurse stations are replaced by what the company calls "open workspaces" that can be used by patients and families. Each unit has two lounge areas, one quiet, with salt-water aquariums, and the other a "music lounge," with performing musicians year-round. Employees are offered daily relaxation sessions, and are encouraged to use the onsite fitness center.

  No. 9: Alston & Bird
There is no pecking-order mentality here. Folks have a sense of humor without regard to status
Working fathers who are primary caregivers get the same three months' paid parental leave mothers do

  No. 10: Vision Service Plan
This California-based eye-care insurance company lets employees extend one of their benefits to friends: Up to four pals can receive special discounts on eye-care services and eyewear through Vision Service Plan doctors. Employees are also eligible for an education assistance program, and paid time off for volunteer work.
